Interview by: Sandra Lopez – The Queen of Padel
For those who you don’t know, Alvaro was the person to bring padel to Ireland, he is an amazing coach, and amazing player, and a amazing person, willing to help whatever he can when it comes to padel. Thank you, Álvaro.
On a personal note I would say that I met Álvaro for the first time almost a year ago, when I did my padel coach session (happy to be a qualified coach thank you to his amazing course) with him in Bushy park, we had been in contact over text the 2 years before that as I was looking for padel facilities near my area, so totally delighted to have Little Ireland Padel Club opening up later on the year, we are hoping to have amazing people joining us, to play padel, and to have an incredible padel community, where the inclusivity will be key.
1. What is your name?
Álvaro Cabello
2. Where are you from?
I’m originally from Spain (Cordoba), but I’ve been living in Ireland for many years now.
3. How many years have you been playing padel?
I’ve been playing padel for over 20 years.
4. How many years have you been coaching padel?
I’ve been coaching for about 20 years now, helping players of all levels.
5. Why padel?
Padel combines skill, strategy, and fun. It’s a sport that is both accessible and challenging, which is why I love it.
6. How does it feel to be the person who brought padel to Ireland?
It’s incredibly rewarding! Seeing the sport grow and develop in Ireland has been one of my proudest achievements.
7. Favourite male Premier Padel player?
Definitely Alejandro Galán – his skills and attitude on the court are second to none.
8. Favourite shot in padel?
The bandeja – it’s a classic, and when executed well, it’s such an elegant and effective shot.
9. In which side of the court do you play?
I prefer playing on the right side of the court.
10. Favourite female Premier Padel player?
Alejandra Salazar – her consistency and mental toughness make her one of my favourites.
11. Favourite city to play in?
I love playing in Malaga – there’s something special about the energy there, plus the weather!
12. Favourite club in Ireland?
Bushy Park of course! It’s been home to so many great memories and achievements for me.
13. What is your best shot (when you are playing)?
I’d say my la chiquita is one of my strongest shots – I’ve worked on it for years.
14. Do you think padel will be Olympic in 2032?
Of course, I believe there’s a strong chance. The sport is growing rapidly worldwide, and it has all the qualities needed for Olympic inclusion.
15. What is the best thing about padel for you?
The community. Padel brings people together, whether you’re playing socially or competitively.
16. How would you encourage a new player to give it a go?
I’d tell them that padel is easy to pick up and fun to play, regardless of experience. Just grab a racket and enjoy!
17. How do you see the future of padel in Ireland?
I see explosive growth in the coming years. As more people discover the sport, it will become a key part of Ireland’s sporting landscape.
18. What makes you smile in padel?
The joy of seeing players improve and develop their love for the game, whether it’s in a training session or a match.
19. Why should players join the Padel Federation of Ireland?
The Padel Federation of Ireland (PFI) is the officially recognised federation in Ireland. Joining the PFI gives players the opportunity to compete in the national circuit and represent Ireland on the international scene. The federation regulates the rules, ensures fair play, and works hard to promote padel with a wide range of programs and events throughout the year. It’s the best way to stay connected to the sport’s growth and access official competition pathways.
I suggest to everyone to have a look into Feb 2025 newsletter
20. Why do you think they call me the Queen of Padel?
I’m sure it’s because of your exceptional skills, leadership, and the way you inspire others in the world of padel!
