A Farewell to a Legend: Celebrating Coach John Brady’s Retirement
By Sandra López – The Queen of Padel | GoPadel Magazine
After nearly three decades of unwavering dedication, Coach John Brady has announced his retirement from coaching at Wicklow Tennis Club, marking the end of an era that has profoundly shaped the Irish tennis and padel community.
A Legacy Spanning 29 Years
John’s coaching journey at Wicklow Tennis Club began in 1996, and over the past 29 years, he has mentored hundreds of players, from young juniors to passionate adults. His legacy isn’t just measured in titles or trophies, but in the countless lives he’s impacted — teaching discipline, respect, and the joy of sport.
His presence has been a cornerstone of Irish tennis, and in recent years, he brought that same passion and mentorship to the world of padel, helping fuel its rapid growth with the same trademark enthusiasm he brought to every lesson.
A Community Celebration
On Sunday, May 11th, the Wicklow Tennis Club community came together to honour John’s incredible career. It was a day filled with smiles, stories, and heartfelt tributes — including speeches by junior club captains Muireann and Harry, fellow coach Ashley Wynne, and club president Tina Meehan. His daughters Jan and Ali joined the celebration, and friends from overseas tuned in to share in the moment.
The courts were alive with activity — from junior tennis matches to a wonderful ‘Enjoy Tennis’ session with the Blue Dolphins Special Olympics athletes, who have trained under John’s guidance for years. The event was a perfect reflection of who John is: inclusive, encouraging, and endlessly giving.
The Padel Connection – My Personal Tribute

I first met John during our padel coaching course in Bushy Park, and from the very first moment, I couldn’t believe his vibe. He had this light around him — so positive, so willing, so full of energy and humility. He won my heart straight away.
Despite all his years of experience, John showed up like a student eager to learn, with no ego, only joy. That’s rare. And that’s why he made such a deep impression on me — and on so many others. His openness and warmth reminded me what real leadership looks like: gentle, generous, and joyful.
A Lasting Impact
John’s retirement is the close of a monumental chapter, but his legacy is far from over. The programs he helped shape, the players he mentored, the values he passed on — these will echo through Irish sport for generations.
From Wicklow to Bushy to every court in between, one thing is clear: Coach John Brady didn’t just coach. He inspired. And we’re all better for having shared the court with him.
From everyone at GoPadel Magazine and the entire community:
Thank you, John.
You may be stepping back from coaching, but your spirit will always be part of our game.
With admiration, love, and a few happy tears,
Sandra López
